This decorative painting by Lucy Burgess, beautifully showcases some of the key features of the Grade II* listed historic swimming pool. The composition is laid out like a mosaic which perfectly reflects the interior design of the building.
Opened to the public in 1906, the façade has multi-coloured brickwork and terracotta decoration. The main interior public spaces are clad in glazed tiles from floor to ceiling and most of the many windows have decorative stained glass.
After closing in 1993, the charity Victoria Baths Trust was formed which set out to repair and maintain the building in order to bring it fully back into public use. Since then significant restoration has taken place and the building now has over 30,000 visitors a year enjoying a wide range of activities including exhibitions, festivals and weddings.
Lucy Burgess’ work reflects on her own personal memories of her hometown, she explains ‘I truly believe art should make you think, feel and reminisce - it doesn't have to match the couch as the old saying goes. Much of my work plays on the memories I share with many communities across Stockport; which marked the start of an exciting future for me and my art.’
