This digital illustration by artist Stephen Millership, shows the imposing figure of Friedrich Engels, the man who, alongside Karl Marx, invented Marxism. The German socialist philosopher was the closest collaborator of Karl Marx, co-writing 'The Communist Manifesto’ which remains one of the world's most influential political texts.

Engels’ connection to Manchester started when he first visited in 1842 and while observing the cities slums, witnessed its many horrors, notably child labour, the environment, and the overworked and impoverished labourers. The Soviet Era statue was permanently installed in Manchester as part of the Manchester International Festival by Turner-winning artist Phil Collins, in 2017.

Millership’s work is influenced by the golden age of the travel poster, re-imagined with a modern aesthetic. He’s illustrated many of Manchester’s most loved landmarks and attractions.
