Manchester’s iconic pub Sinclair’s Oyster Bar is under attack from a supernatural enemy in this terrifying painting by local artist Sarah Connel. The shadowy Spider-shaped monster from the hugely successful science fiction drama ‘Stranger Things’ dominates the blood-red skyline in this hellish scene.
The much loved Oyster bar is no stranger to adversity though, having faced many challenges in its long and turbulent history. Having survived World War II and the IRA bombing of 1996, which destroyed many of the surrounding buildings, It was later moved, brick by brick, 300 metres to its current location in Shambles Square in order to allow for the regeneration of Manchester city centre.
The pub itself is a Grade II listed Tudour building that dates back to 1720, and is currently owned by Samuel Smith’s brewery; one of the oldest breweries in the UK, known for its reasonable prices and traditional pub atmosphere.
Sarah Connell is a Manchester based artist who describes her artwork as focusing on light, atmosphere and colour. Through her work, she captures many of Manchester's most iconic scenes and landmarks.
