The striking beauty of John Ryland’s library architecture truly stands out between the modern buildings on Deansgate in Manchester. The John Rylands Research Institute and Library is a late-Victorian neo-Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester, England. It is part of the University of Manchester. The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands.

The watercolour style of this illustration creates a worn and degraded feel, which compliments the age of the library, whilst the telephone wires and traffic lights remind the audience of the age of the building by bringing them back into the modern world. The interior of the library is just as breathtaking and this illustration makes the audience want to go in and look around the fantastic building.

Phil Shelly is our resident photographer and also an illustrator working in the heart of Manchester as Phil Shelly Creative. After studying Illustration at Plymouth University, Phil packed up and headed up north to Manchester to create a variety of pop culture and landscape-based art.

Fine art quality print, hand trimmed and packed with care in Manchester, UK.
