This charming illustration captures a view across Stockport's historic Hillgate. In the distance, Stockport's oldest parish church; St Mary's Church can be seen rising high above a collection of red brick buidings below. In the foreground of the image is the famous Robinsons Brewery. The brewery is still a family-run, regional brewery dating back to 1838.

Hillgate as an area is a diverse southern neighbourhood of Stockport and is characterised by low-rise, piecemeal developments where industrial estates sit side-by-side with residential areas, workplace, commercial and places of worship.

It is dissected by the ‘at risk’ historic Hillgate Conservation Area weaving into the town centre and includes pockets of inaccessible green spaces around Hempshaw Brook.

Lucy Burgess’ work reflects on her own personal memories of her hometown, she explains ‘I truly believe art should make you think, feel and reminisce - it doesn't have to match the couch as the old saying goes. Much of my work plays on the memories I share with many communities across Stockport; which marked the start of an exciting future for me and my art.’
