Stockport Underbanks is part of Stockport's historic old town located in the centre of Stockport and consists of Great Underbank and Little Underbank. It sits next to the Market Place and boasts a range of retail, art and hospitality businesses.
The underbank is currently undergoing a £7 million regeneration, it is rapidly becoming a vibrant independent quarter with new cafes and bars opening all the time. Key features include the 16th-century Underbank Hall, which was historically connected to the Arderne family.
Because of its historic architecture and rich history, the Underbanks is a designated conservation area.
Lucy Burgess’ work reflects on her own personal memories of her hometown, she explains ‘I truly believe art should make you think, feel and reminisce - it doesn't have to match the couch as the old saying goes. Much of my work plays on the memories I share with many communities across Stockport; which marked the start of an exciting future for me and my art.’
