Influenced by the golden age of the travel poster with a modern twist, this graphic illustration of Hell is a City is by the superb Stephen Millership.

The rooftops of the Refuge building and a newly built Oxford Road Station feature in this depiction of the great British cult classics – a 1960 cop thriller, 'Hell Is a City'. Based on the 1954 novel of the same title by Maurice Procter, the studio Hammer film was based and filmed in Manchester.

The snapshot we see in this illustration is on the top of The Palace Hotel on Oxford Road, featuring the famous rooftop chase scene. It starred Stanley Baker and Billie Whitelaw, and was directed by Val 'Quatermass' Guest. It was partly inspired by the British New Wave films and resembles American film noir.

Millership has created many illustrations of some of the most loved areas and landmarks of Manchester and its surroundings.
