By Stephen Millership
‘Madchester’ by north-west based illustrator Stephen Millership, shows a snapshot of the notorious Hacienda club made famous during the late 1980’s and early 1990s through its championing of music acts such as New Order and The Happy Mondays, and subsequently the burgeoning acid house and rave scene of the late 1980s.
The term ‘Madchester’ was coined by Factory Records' Tony Wilson and was shorthand for the musical and cultural scene that developed in Manchester in the late 1980s. With its simplified forms and bold colors ‘Madchester’ perfectly captures the freedom and fun of a club night.
Opened in 1982, the venue was owned by Factory Records and built in the style of an old warehouse with a ‘New York’ influence. Factory graphic designer Peter Saville, was also heavily involved in the iconic design of the venue.
Other big name artists to have played at the Hacienda include Primal Scream, The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Inspiral Carpets, Oasis, Madonna, Blur, The prodigy, The Fall, Pet shop boys among many others!
Millership’s work is influenced by the golden age of the travel poster, re-imagined with a modern aesthetic. He’s illustrated many of Manchester’s most loved landmarks and attractions.
