This striking photograph by Berlin based photographer Fedor Vasilev showcases the imposing Victorian-era steel viaducts of Castlefield, a network of canals in the heart of Manchester. Castlefield is the oldest part of the city, dating back to around AD 79 with evidence of a Roman fort still visible today.

A favorite with both locals and visitors and widely regarded as one of Manchester's most beautiful areas, Castlefield was also the epicenter of the Industrial revolution of the late 1700s.It was the terminus for the Bridgewater Canal, one of the World's first Industrial canals as well as was the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world's first industrial canal, built in 1764. The oldest canal warehouse opened in 1779 and the world's first passenger railway terminated here in 1830.

Today, the Grade II-listed viaduct is being transformed into a green ‘sky park’ developed and managed by the National Trust building on Castlefield's reputation as one of the largest conservation areas in Manchester.

Fedor Vasilev is an experienced portrait photographer currently living in Berlin and working in a unique style creating images that represent a person or a concept.
