This bold and colourful painting of The Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Basin is by local artist Sue Scott.

The Bridgewater Canal is a 39-mile canal stretching from Runcorn to Leigh in North West England. Constructed over 250 years ago by the Duke of Bridgewater, it is considered to be the first true canal in England. Built at one level, its route followed the contours of the land to avoid the use of locks.

The canal was constructed to transport the Duke of Bridgewater’s coal from his mine at Worsley in Greater Manchester efficiently and cheaply to the rapidly expanding towns and cities nearby. At its peak, over 3 million tonnes of traffic used the Bridgewater Canal. Nowadays, it is a leisure waterway popular with many cruising boaters.

Sue is a Manchester based landscape artist who creates urban and rural paintings in acrylics. Sue spent many years living in rural Scotland but visiting Manchester regularly she became interested in the architectural contrasts, materials and styles of the city and began painting it when she returned to live there in 2011. Since then, Sue has been working full time developing her painting style and techniques.

Rural Landscapes, in particular the Lake District have featured more recently in Sue’s work, providing a break from her urban surroundings. Open space, mountains, trees and lakes provide subject for these paintings. Sue’s current work is dominated by sharp lines and bold colours which are an amalgamation of the unique hues and colour palette which she observes in each location.
