This bright and lively image is of Manchester’s St Anne’s square, one of the oldest areas of the city which dates back to the beginning of the 18th century when Manchester was a small rural town, little more than a village in fact. In this painting by local artist Michael Gutteridge, St Annes Square buzzes with activity as people pass through, surrounded either side by the impressive facades of its many historic buildings. Painted in his idiosyncratic style, the buildings appear to grow in front of your eyes , twisting and bending towards the technicoloured sky.

The Grade I listed St Ann's Church can be seen in the distance. Originally constructed from locally quarried, red Collyhurst sandstone the church was built in a neoclassical style from 1709. In the middle of the image is a Boer War Memorial made by Hamo Thornycroft in 1907.

Michael Gutteridge is best known as a painter of urban landscapes, mostly of Manchester, the city he grew up in and still lives today. Gutteridge’s paintings possess a sensual vibrancy achieved through distortions of form and colour, lively brushwork, and a playful skewing of perspective. His work has been used in a promotional capacity by Marketing Manchester, Lancaster University, Manchester University, and in literary and music media as book jackets and in a pop video. Michael has also been featured in newspapers, magazines, television, BBC online and radio and his paintings are held in private collections all over the world.
