Many of the quintessential Stockport landmarks are shown in this wonderful painting by Stockport based artist, Lucy Burgess. The Plaza, an Grade II* listed art deco single-screen cinema and theatre in Stockport, The Hat works, a hat museum based in an old cotton spinning mill, and Stockport County Football club, the local football club which competes in EFL League One, can all be seen in this dynamic composition.
In the foreground you can see local musical heroes The Blossoms standing in front of Strawberry Studios where legendary acts such as Paul McCartney, The Bay City Rollers, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Ramones and the Stone Roseshave all recorded.
Lucy Burgess’ work reflects on her own personal memories of her hometown, she explains ‘I truly believe art should make you think, feel and reminisce - it doesn't have to match the couch as the old saying goes. Much of my work plays on the memories I share with many communities across Stockport; which marked the start of an exciting future for me and my art.’
Burgess has exhibited in Stockport Art Gallery, The Arc Centre, and she had her first solo exhibition in The Room at The Top in 2015. Her work is available in the town's popular tourist attractions: Staircase House, the Hat Works and the Air raid shelters as well as some great independent shops including The Warren.
