The highly decorative interior of the Royal exchange theater can be seen in this colorful painting by local artist Lucy Burgess. The theatre sits at the heart of Manchester’s culturally vibrant city centre. It’s the North West’s largest and only full-time, text based producing theatre internationally renowned for commissioning, creating, and developing original and ambitious theatre. The interior houses a unique, ambitious, seven-sided theatre-in-the-round, designed within a grand Edwardian Cotton Exchange in Manchester. The bar 'The Rivals', seen in the lower half of the composition, is named after the first production upon opening.
Lucy Burgess’ work reflects on her own personal memories of her hometown, she explains ‘I truly believe art should make you think, feel and reminisce - it doesn't have to match the couch as the old saying goes. Much of my work plays on the memories I share with many communities across Stockport; which marked the start of an exciting future for me and my art.’
